MT. PLEASANT, MICHIGAN - Several American Indians who contributed to the new book "Voice on the Water: Great Lakes Native America Now" will be at the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan's Ziibwing Center to read from their contributions to the book.
The launch begins at Friday, December 2 at 4:00 pm and runs until 6:00 pm.
"Voice on the Water" is an anthology of creative works representing the contemporary American Indian experience in Michigan. It features poetry, short stories, essays, photographs and artwork. It also includes a glossary of Anishinaabe terms and contributor biographies.
The event is the second launch of the book this week. The first launch occurred on Wednesday in Marquette, home of the Northern Michigan University.
Northern Michigan University's Center for Native American Studies and the NMU Press collaborated on the anthology, which was made possible by a $15,000 grant from the Michigan Humanities Council.
Contributors Courtney Biggs, Cherokee/Ojibwe; Ronald Douglas, Saginaw Chippewa; Janis Fairbanks, Fond du Lac Band Member; Carole Franklin, Potawatomi and Dr. Jessica Rickert, Potawatomi; among others are expected to be present for the readings.
