Veterans Honored This Weekend at Several Powwows

CLEARFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA – All powwows typically honor veterans throughout the year, but this weekend, with Veterans Day being celebrated next Monday, it is appropriate several powwows are named veterans powwows.

American Indians and Alaska Natives serve in the United States military at a rate of twice the national average among all racial/ethnic groups throughout the country. Hundreds of thousands of tribal members have served in the US military in the last century, including the recent engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As of March 2012 the Pentagon estimates that since 2001, 64 American Indians and Alaskan Natives have died fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq; 42 in Operation Iraqi Freedom; 22 in Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan).
