The two Umatilla sisters have electrified Native pride throughout Indian country. Outside the arena in Oklahoma City prior to Tuesday's Elite Eight game, a group of local American Indians drummed and sang honor songs for the Native basketball stars. Other proud American Indian fans held up signs that read "Umatilla Thrilla."
“Inside the arena there were between 200 to 300 American Indians to see the Schimmel show. My twin sister drove four hours to see them play,”
said Patti Tanewasha, tribal member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs in Oregon, who is currently a business major at Haskell Indian Nations University.
“It has been kind of crazy up here. Everyone seems to be talking about them. A whole lot of their family is in New Orleans to watch them play,”
said Dave Tovey, executive director of the Umatilla Tribe on Friday afternoon.
“We have made provision for tribal members to watch the game on a large screen at the Wild Horse Resort & Casino on Sunday afternoon. People from Warm Springs will be coming over to see the game,”
If Louisville wins against the Cal Bears, the Schimmel Show will play for the national championship on Tuesday night.
