Native Brief: ALBUQUERQUE - Another White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education educational roundtable will be held in Albuquerque today at the Sheraton Uptown conference center.

This is the third educational roundtable of four that will be held to hear from tribal officials on how to improve outcomes for American Indian and Alaska Native students.

The mission of the Initiative is to help expand educational opportunities and improve educational outcomes for all American Indian and Alaska Native students, including opportunities to learn their Native languages, cultures, and histories and receive complete and competitive educations that prepare them for college, careers, and productive and satisfying lives.

The Initiative's work includes creating opportunities for students to learn more about their American Indian and Native Alaska cultures and to receive an education that prepares them for the future.

The first roundtable was held in Rapid City, South Dakota; the second was held in Norman, Oklahoma on Monday. An additional meeting will be held in Shelton, Washington on February 16.

Participants of the Initiative include: Tex Hall, Chairman, Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation; Jefferson Keel, Lieutenant Governor, Chickasaw Nation, and President, National Congress of American Indians; William Mendoza, Director, White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education; Keith Moore, Director, Bureau of Indian Education, US Department of the Interior; Joyce Silverthorne, Director, Office of Indian Education, US Department of Education and Jo Ann Kauffman, member, Nez Perce.
