The Red Bottom Celebration Remains Rich in History

Steve Mohan in Native Currents. Discussion »

FRAZER, MT -The Red Bottom Celebration has been going on each year for over a century. It has always been a celebration of Native culture and tradition that involves, dancing, crafts, food, and most importantly sharing with one another. Since 1903 the celebration has taken place and one man, Mark Trahant, has his own story of the Red bottom Celebration.

Red Bottom CelebrationOver 100 Years Celebrating Family

The great grandparents of Mark Trahant were Assiniboines who lived in Northeastern Montana at the new Fort Peck Indian Reservation. The buffalo were gone from the area and replaced with disease and starvation on the reservation. Even in that harsh environment, Walter Sr. and Josephine Butch Clark had 11 children that they told they could prosper in the new world.

Life was still hard on the family as they had lost two children with a third, Walter Jr, very ill. Walter Sr, who was known as Chabaza or Stockade, vowed to the Creator that if his son was made well that he would celebrate life through ceremony for any who could come. His prayers were answered and Walter Jr was restored to health.

So Walter Sr invited people from all over the area to his celebration. They fed many people as well as provided shelter for those who did not bring their own. They also gave away many amazing things like blankets, clothes, and horses.
