Steve Mohan in Native Currents. Discussion »
LOUDONVILLE, OHIO With Labor Day having past and the kids going back to school there are still great powwows to be had. Fall has started to come and with beautiful weather in much of the United States the Great Mohican Powwow shows us that it does not have to be the middle of summer to have a great powwow weekend.
This is the 28th annual Great Mohican Powwow and each year they bring their best to the table. This year there will be over 9000 dollars in prize money awarded in many events. Arvel Bird, who is better known as Lord of the Strings, will bring his great talents as a Native violinist, flutist, and storyteller. He was named best artist at the Native American Music Awards in 2007.
Mohicans are an Eastern Algonquian tribe that originally settled around the Hudson River Valley. After the Revolutionary War most of the Mohicans moved westward under the protection of the Iroquois and that is how many of them moved to the Ohio area where a small portion of them are now.
The Great Mohican Powwow is often one of the top powwows in the United States every year and there is no doubt this big celebration will continue to impress this weekend.
