Quapaw Pow Wow

QUAPAW, OKLAHOMA - The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma will be holding their 140th Annual Powwow starting July 4th and running through July 7th. The Quapaw Pow Wow is the longest running powwow in the state of Oklahoma and is the second oldest in the United States. The Quapaw have held this powwow to bring together tribal members from all over to sing, dance, and honor their culture. It is held in Quapaw, Oklahoma which is the Quapaw Tribal land.

Several hundred years ago, The Quapaw were a division of the Dhegiha Sioux. When the Dhegiha Sioux left the Ohio Valley they split into 5 separate tribes with the Quapaw being one. They settled into the area where the Arkansas River met the Mississippi and due to the great soil brought by the two rivers the Quapaw developed into great farmers.

Like many tribes in the 19th century, the Quapaw were moved from their location and relocated to Oklahoma by the United States government. They now have over 3000 tribal members with over 800 in the state of Oklahoma. With many members of the tribe located elsewhere the annual powwow is made ever more important to the Quapaw people and continues to be a valued part of their culture.
