May 21 & 22
BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN - The All Nations Veterans Council will host the 4th Annual “Teaching Our Tradition” Powwow this coming weekend - May 21 & 22 - at the Brighton State Recreation Area, approximately 50 miles northwest of Detroit.
The powwow will begin at 10:00 am and conclude at dusk on Saturday and be held 10:00 am - 5:00 pm on Sunday.
“It is one of the most traditional powwows in Michigan,”
said Wayne Hardwick (Sault Ste. Marie Chippewa) chairperson of All Nations Veterans Council. “It makes me feel really good. Each year I ask our veterans what we can do to make this a better powwow.”
The powwow will feature American Indian dancing, drumming and dress ceremonies. There will be two grand entries both days and various other American Indian events. Native food and handmade Indian items will be on sale at trader booths.

The powwow is held in a Michigan State Park at a serene spot overlooking Bishop Lake Three Fires Group Organizational Campground. Last year the powwow committee asked the State of Michigan to name the campground, Three Fires, and met all approvals all the way up to the signature of former Governor Jennifer Granholm.
The cost to attend the powwow is $5 for adults and children over 12; $3 for seniors and children under the age of 12. Children under 5 are admitted free. A Recreation Passport is required to enter the state park.
