Taos Pueblo Powwow Headlines a Weekend Full of Powwows

TAOS, NEW MEXICO – Taos Pueblo is holding its 27th annual powwow at the Taos Pueblo powwow grounds this weekend. There will be both dancing and drum competitions accross the 3 day powwow.

15 Powwows Across Indian country

Taos is a language that the Taos Pueblo community speaks in Northern New Mexico. The Taos language has shown signs of language endangerment with most of the people speaking it being 30 and older. Although there are some good signs for the Taos language with over 50 percent of the ethnic population speaking it. The Taos Pueblo have been guarded over their language and culture.

Taos Pueblo is also an ancient Pueblo that is around 1000 years old and being within a mile of the current city of Taos, New Mexico. Nearly 2000 people live in the area of the 100,000 acre reservation attached to the pueblo. Blue Lake is an important part of that area that was taken in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt as part of a National Forest. In 1970, President Nixon returned Blue Lake to the Taos Pueblo and the Taos Pueblo hope one day to see the rest of their land returned.
