WASHINGTON DC - The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian has scheduled the following events for the month of August:
Red Power Squad, Live Music for Families, Indian Summer Showcase, Saturday, August 6. 5 pm, Welcome Plaza.
The museum's 6th annual Indian Summer Showcase - a festival and concert series that hosts artists, musicians and performers from tribes across the Western hemisphere - concludes with the Red Power Squad, a group from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Formed in 1998 by Conway Kootenay, the Red Power Squad is a Native rap and hip-hop group designed to provide an outlet for inner-city youth. All concerts are free and open to the public.
Always Becoming, Film Screening, Friday, Aug. 5, 7 pm, Dinner and a Movie, Rasmuson Theater.
Join us for the premiere of "Always Becoming," a new film by Santa Clara Pueblo artist Nora Naranjo-Morse that explores issues of Native identity, place and memory through the creation of modern sculpture. Naranjo-Morse's work is currently featured in Vantage Point: The Contemporary Native Art Collection, currently on view at NMAI through August 7. The screening begins at 7 pm. Cuisine from our Zagat-rated Mitsitam Cafe will be available for purchase from 5 - 6:30 pm. Seats in the theater are limited, register online at the Museum Calendar »
Beyond Extinction: Consciousness of TaÃno and Caribbean Indigeneity, Discussion, Friday, Aug. 26. Room 4018, 4th level, 2:30-4:30 pm.
Moderated by the museum's assistant director for research José Barreiro, this symposium features scholars who will discuss the survival of the Taíno language, identity and material culture in contemporary Caribbean consciousness.
