WASHINGTON - After a couple weeks off the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is back in action and having an oversight hearing on political and legal relationships between governments this Thursday.

US Senate Committee on Indian AffairsLive Webcast Thursday

A big part of relationships between the US Government and Native American Tribes is self determination. Tribal self determination has to do with how tribes in the United States govern themselves, It is meant to change a lot of the policies that the United States government put on Native American tribes like the reservation system. It allows the tribes to enact many of their own laws that are different from the United States and even establish their own schools and universities.

Native American self determination is one of the more important issues that tribes face when it comes to dealing with the US government. Some parts of it such as cultural renewal and reservation development are always at the forefront, self determination has a large scope and touches every Native American in the United States today.

Now due to the nature of how the US Government deals with Native American Tribes this hearing goes beyond just self determination. It will encompass all aspects of the political and legal issues that face Native Americans today.

The hearing will be webcast live.
