WASHINGTON - The US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will be holding an oversight hearing on new tax burdens on tribal self determination.

US Senate Committee on Indian AffairsThursday 2:15 pm edt

Tribal self determination has to do with how tribes in the United States govern themselves. It is meant to change a lot of the policies that the United States government put on Native American tribes like the reservation system. It allows the tribes to enact many of their own laws that are different from the United States and even establish their own schools and universities.

Native American self determination is one of the more important issues that tribes face when it comes to dealing with the US government. Some parts of it such as cultural renewal and reservation development are always at the forefront, self determination has a large scope and touches every Native American in the United States today.
