WASHINGTON - The US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will hold an oversight hearing called "State & Federal Tax Policy: Building New Markets in Indian Country."

The hearing will commence after a business meeting that is scheduled to begin at 2:15 pm. The business at hand involves two Senate bills:

S. 1763, The SAVE Native Women Act and
S.1065, The Blackfoot Land Settlement Act,

which will settle land dispute involving the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe, based at the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho.

The Stand Against Violence and Empower (SAVE) Native Women Act will:

  • clarify tribal civil jurisdiction over non-Indians;
  • create new federal offenses to combat violence against women;
  • increase support for Tribal Domestic and Sexual Assault Coalitions; and
  • provide additional accountability measures to ensure federal consultation on these issues is meaningful and effective.

The oversight hearing will hear testimony from four expert witnesses who will discuss the implications of state and federal tax policy, while building tribal economies.
