SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA - Russell Means has faced many challenges in his life. Now, he is facing the biggest challenge of all: cancer of the esophagus that has now spread to his lungs.

Even as he faces this life-threatening challenge, Means talks about creating a national health campaign for American Indians.

“The federal government's Indian programs have equated to genocide for Indian people,”

Means told the Native News Network on Sunday from Scottsdale, Arizona where he is resuming treatment today.

"There really are no prevention programs that have been effective for Indians. We need to have programs that can be more effective to promote good health and exercise. I think most of medicine only deals with the symptoms, not necessarily healing."

Means, who was one of the American Indian Movement leaders, who was at Wounded Knee in 1973 to fight corruption of tribal governments. Since that time, Means has worked on many other issues impacting the lives of American Indians and indigenous peoples from various parts of the globe.

Since being diagnosed with cancer, Means has used alternative healing medicines to fight the cancer. He has worked with traditional healers from Mexico, Canada and the United States. "I drink a lot of green tea and use other herbs," said Means.

“I have medicine men who are Lakota and one who is Navajo who are working with me.”

"Many people from throughout the United States - and even internationally - have sent their well wishes and said they are praying for me. I want people to know that I really appreciate all of their support."

Besides, his cancer, Means has been a diabetic for several years.

Two weeks ago, Dennis Banks, one of the co-founders of the American Indian Movement visited Means at his home near San Jose, New Mexico.

“Good Dennis and I discussed the need for better health for Indians when he was here,”

replied Means when asked about his recent meeting with Dennis Banks, "He plans to come back to visit with me when his schedule allows it."
