Beattie Park Mounds
ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS - The "16th Annual Honor the Mounds Gathering" Powwow is appropriately named because the powwow takes place in Beattie Park in downtown Rockford, Illinois, among the Beattie Park Mound Group.
The Beattie Park Mound Group is listed in the US National Register of Historic Places. The Group consists of three conical mounds; one of which is located outside of the park boundaries. One of the mounds is the shaped like a turtle; another one is a linear mound. Indian mounds pre-date when Jesus Christ walked on earth and can be found in the Great Lake region of the United States.
"16th Annual Honor the Mounds Gathering" Powwow is sponsored by the Native American Awareness Committee of Rockford. This one day only powwow will feature American Indian drumming and dancing, Native food and Native arts and craft.
