Powwow Weekend
MAYETTA, KANSAS - On a percentage basis, American Indians serve in the United States Armed Forces at high rates than any other racial/ethnic group in the country. Veterans are proud to protect the land their ancestors have called home for centuries.
This Saturday, September 24, the veterans of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation remember their service to our country and share their celebration with others at their 14th Annual Powwow.
In 1989 the veterans of the Nation established the We-Ta-Se American Legion Post 410 to provide a proper "full" military burial for all of the Prairie Band Potawatomi veterans on the reservation. The We-Ta-Se Color Guard is also available for any veteran's family that requests a military burial in the reservation's immediate area.
The We-Ta-Se Color Guard performs at approximately 45 events annually. The We-Ta-Se honor guard is proud to serve the Nation and have participated as the color guard at Kansas City Chiefs football games and Kansas City Royals baseball games. They led other American Indian color guards at the "Lori Piestewa" National Memorial. Piestewa was the first American Indian woman killed in combat. And, the We-Ta-Se Color Guard led the procession for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation at the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC.
