Manufactured Homes Often See the Significant Damage
In a report prepared by the Oglala Sioux Tribe's Home Improvement Program, it was disclosed 14 other homes sustained heavy damage. All damaged homes were located in the Oglala district of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Oglala Sioux Tribe President John Yellow Bird Steele immediately activated emergency response teams to the location and an emergency meeting was held earlier last night at the Oglala District CAP Office to deal with the immediate needs of the families whose homes were destroyed.
On Monday, the President declared a State of Emergency. It was the second State of Emergency, he declared due to the weather within one week. Last week, he declared a State of Emergency due to the heat wave and prolonged drought that has hit the reservation this summer.
In the State of Emergency for Saturday's high winds, President Steele called on the Governor of the State of South Dakota to provide assistance to the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
Families of the damaged homes are seeking refuge in homes of relatives. On an ongoing basis, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation already suffers from lack of housing.
