With the fierce tone of this presidential election in the United States between incumbent President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney, seeing the Thomas for President
mock-up political button on the Native Vote Facebook wall last Sunday afternoon was a nice diversion. It provided for a nice smile and a chance to remember a great American Indian movie.
Thomas Builds-the-Fire, played by Native actor Evan Adams, was a hit in the 1998 film Smoke Signals.
He was a hit then and he was a hit on the Native News Network's Facebook wall after we posted it.
Looking at the political pin you could almost hear Thomas saying: Hey, Victor
with the contagious smile on his face.
The mock-up photo of Thomas Builds-the-Fire under the words Native Vote
presented an opportunity for readers to weigh in on a choice for president. Several people posted comments that read: He has my vote.
The posting received over 600 Likes
during this past week.
During the week, the Native News Network was able to secure an interview with Dr. Evan Adams.
Yes, Evan Adams, Coastal Salish, went on to become a medical doctor. He had done extensive work in the areas of AIDS/HIV and alcohol treatment.
We asked him the following question:
If you could vote, who would you vote for in the United States? Obama or Romney - why?
His answer:
Obama! I saw Obama during his Inaugural train tour into Washington DC, in February 2009. He came through Baltimore where I was studying at the time. People were literally dancing in the streets, the feeling of hope was so great! I was deeply moved. Now there's a leader - someone who can inspire millions!
