The Permian Basin is Host to Intertribal Powwow in Texas

Steve Mohan in Native Currents. Discussion »

ODESSA, TEXAS – The Permian Basin is rich with Native American heritage. Up until the last 19th century the Comanche called this area home. For the 13th year, the Permian Basin brings back that rich tradition of the Comanche and others for their intertribal powwow.

The Comanche had a great culture and a lot of that was surrounded in horses. The Comanche first started to emerge as a unique tribe of Native Americans after splitting from the Shoshone before 1700. Much of their land encompassed the southwest and much of the Great Plains. It was not until the acquisition of horses during the Pueblo Revolt that the Comanche started to embrace what was to be the biggest part of their culture, the horse.

Many historians believe that the break from the Shoshone was due to the Comanche wanting to find more horses among the settlers of New Spain instead of looking for new herds of buffalo. It is believed that the Comanche supplied horses to not only other tribes of the southwest but also the French and American traders. At their peak the Comanche controlled what is believed to be over 2 million horses and they themselves numbered close to 50,000.

The Comanche embraced the horse into their culture this weekend that will be on display at the Permian Basin Powwow. There will be many other tribes and a ton dancing and drums to fill the weekend.
