Over 100 Tribes
SANTA FE - Indian Market Week kicks off today in Santa Fe. This year is the 90th Annual Santa Fe Indian Art Market.
While the actual Santa Fe Indian Market is slated for this upcoming weekend in the heart of Santa Fe, Indian Market Week was developed to present a series of events in Native film, literature, music, fashion and visual art.
The Santa Fe Indian Market officially begins on Saturday, 7:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sunday 8:00 - 5:00 pm.
American Indian artists from over 100 United States federally recognized tribes and First Nations' tribes from Canada. There will be over 600 artist booths in the 14 downtown city blocks near the Santa Fe's historic plaza. It will not be unusual to see cross-generations within one booth. Some of the artists have been coming to the Santa Fe Indian Market for up to 60 years.
The Santa Fe Indian Market is a direct reflection of the lives of Native people and the communities they represent; their artwork is the universal language.
There are 10 kinds of art in both traditional and contemporary forms you can buy at the Santa Fe Indian Market: jewelry, pottery, sculpture, textiles, paintings, wooden carvings (Kachinas), bead work, baskets and diverse arts, which encompass a variety of items including drums, bows and arrows, and cradle boards. There are literally thousands of handcrafted works of art for sale.
The Indian Art Market is organized by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, which is a non-profit organization that produces the Santa Fe Indian Market and over 40 events and programs throughout the year.
The Santa Fe Indian Market generates approximately $100 million in revenues for the City of Santa Fe.
