30 Years of HIV/AIDS

WASHINGTON - This week commemorates thirty years the first cases of AIDS/HIV in the United States. With this observance the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, released information: Today, an estimated 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV, and nearly one out of five people living with HIV do not know it, according to the CDC.

While research for a cure is still under way, HIV testing is especially critical. On June 27, the nation will observe the annual National HIV Testing Day, initiated 17 years ago by the National Association of People with AIDS.

American Indians should pay special attention to the following information supplied by the US Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Minority Health:

  • American Indians/Alaska Natives have a 60 percent higher rate of AIDS as compared to the white population.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native men have a 60 percent higher AIDS rate as compared to white men.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native women have 2.6 times the AIDS rate, and are 3.4 times more likely to die from AIDS, as compared to white women.
  • In 2008, American Indian/Alaska Native women were 2.4 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV infection, as compared to the White female population.
