14 Powwows
SAULT STE. MARIE, MICHIGAN - For several years, several American Indian tribes and community organizations have held powwows to bring in the New Year. Most of the powwows were created to offer an alternative to celebrating with alcohol. They have turned into a nice way for family and friends to say bid farewell to the old and welcome in the new.
One such powwow will be held at the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. A spiritual gathering at the Niigaanigiizhik Building will begin at 12 noon est.
The powwow Grand Entry will be held at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm. A feast open to all will be at 5:00 pm.
As the New Year approaches midnight, there will be fun and games, including a hand drum contest and potato dance.
Organizers want to remind the public that absolutely no alcohol or drugs are allowed at the powwow.
Have a safe New Year!
