The Elko Band of the Te Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone Indians began with the founding of Elko, Nevada in 1868. Members of the Central Pacific Railroad founded the town. For almost 50 years, Shoshone families began camping close to the town and working at mining and railroad jobs in the community of Elko. In 1918, there was an Executive Order that established a 160 acre reservation near the city of Elko. All of the 250 Shoshone of Elko were forced to move before receiving their current parcel of land in 1931.

Since then Elko, Nevada remains the largest town in northeastern Nevada. Many Shoshones have continued to migrate there for work on the railroad and mines. The Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 gave the Elko Band of Shoshone the right to organize a government. The Elko Band became a member of Te Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone and the Te Moak Tribal Council has total jurisdiction over all tribal lands, but the Elko Band retain sovereignty over all other affairs.

The Elko Band Powwow promises to be a fun time where the Shoshone can share their culture with others in northeastern Nevada.
