Navajo Nation Council to Decide Fate of Water Settlement

WINDOW ROCK, ARIZONA – A Navajo Nation Council Special Session has been called by Speaker Johnny Naize to address the fate of the Navajo-Hopi Little Colorado River Water Settlement, known as Senate Bill 2109, for Thursday, July 5, at 10:00 am mdt.

In a press released by Speaker Naize's office, the agenda items for the special session are:

  • Legislation 0230-12: Relating To Budget and Finance; Resources and Development and Naa'bik'iyati' Committees: Approving the Proposed Navajo-Hopi Little Colorado
  • Legislation 0149-12: Relating To Resources and Development and Naa'bik'iyati': Opposing the Waiver of Navajo Nation Water Rights Claims and the Navajo Generating Station Lease Extension Provisions of US Senate Bill S 2109

Since Senate Bill 2109 was introduced by Arizona US Sentors Jon Kyl and John McCain, it has met stiff opposition from Diné grassroots groups on the Navajo Indian Reservation.

Navajo President Ben Shelly and Navajo Attorney General Harrison Tsosie have endorsed to the proposed water settlement in spite of the opposition.
