WASHINGTON – Talks between the Navajo Nation and Hopi Nation leadership is taking place in Washington with US Department of the Interior Secretary Ken Salazar today in Washington on the Little Colorado River Settlement.

The controversial Little Colorado River Settlement was rejected by the Navajo Nation Council this summer after a groundswell of opposition from Navajo people.

The following schedule is planned for the Navajo Nation and Hopi Nation with Secretary Salazar in Washington today:

  • 9:30 am – Welcome Session in Secretary Salazar's Office, Navajo, Hopi and DOI
  • 10:00 am – Opening Navajo-Hopi Water Settlement Talks
    • Opening Prayers
    • Introductions
    • Opening Remarks
      Secretary Salazar 5 minutes
      Navajo Nation President Shelly
      Hopi Chairman Shingoitewa
    • Then both Navajo and Hopi leadership will break off into seperate rooms
  • 10:30 am – Secretary Salazar will meet with the Navajo Leadership
  • 11:30 am – Secretary Salazar will meet with Hopi Leadership
  • 12:30 pm – Lunch provided by DOI
  • 1:30 pm – Reconvene with Navajo and Hopi Leadership
  • 2:00 pm – Meeting Concludes
