PORTLAND, OREGON - It takes money to cross the United States - even when walking in the Longest Walk 3 - Reversing Diabetes.

Actually the cross-country Longest Walk 3 is a costly endeavor, considering there are two routes - northern and southern routes - making their way to Washington DC from the west coast.

Costs associated with the five and half months Longest Walk 3 include: gas and oil for vehicles used to transport luggage and participants, food and some camp fees, among other expenses.

The Longest Walk 3 - Reversing Diabetes has been to over 40 different American Indian reservations and communities on their journey, bringing awareness of the negative impact diabetes has within the American Indian communities throughout the United States.

Several American Indian tribes have hosted the Long Walkers, but there are stretches where tribes are no longer based, especially in the eastern portion of the United States.

After hearing the need for cash to pay for the basic needs of the Longest Walk 3 - Reversing Diabetes, a small group of American Indian musicians, led by Lorena "Windfeather" Navarez, Navajo, decided to make a twelve song CD called "The Longest Walk: Reversing Diabetes."

The CD was produced and released by Spirit Wind Records, which produces and promotes American Indian artists who perform a variety of genres of Native music, such as traditional drum, flute, country, folk, new age to Native rock.

Spirit Wind Records was founded and is operated by Donald Blackfox, Mi'kmaq & Cree.

"The CD was born on May 8, 2011. Less than a month before that, I called Donald asking him if it was possible to put something together quickly to benefit the Longest Walk cause, because they were pleading for funds for lodging and gas and sleeping in campsites because of lack of funding. So with Creators help, it was made possible," commented singer and songwriter Windfeather to the Native News Network.

Windfeather wrote Track 2 song, "Whispers of Our Prayers" specifically for the "Longest Walk" CD. "It was meant to be. We were able to get this CD out quickly. I believe the Creator had His hand in this."

The cost to purchase the CD is $16.00; $12.00 of the cost of the CD goes to benefit the Longest Walk 3; the other $4.00 is the actual cost to the manufacturer of the CD.
