Native Brief: NORMAN, OKLAHOMA - The Native American Journalists Association announces the deadline for Native Voices student projects that could send them to the UNITY 2012 conference.

The UNITY 2012 conference will bring together members of the Native American Journalists Association, the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. This year the UNITY conference is in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Mandalay Bay resort during the first week of August.

Any college student can apply, must be a member of Native American Journalist Association. All expenses are paid for one week to work at the UNITY journalists of color conference where students will be working with journalists in a newsroom setting putting together a newspaper, radio broadcast, webcast and/or news broadcasts.

The following information is required to apply:

  • One page resume listing your educational background, work history, awards, journalism-related internships, other scholarships, language proficiency and any work done for your school or community newspaper, radio and/or television
  • Unofficial Transcript(s)
  • NAJA Legal Binding Contract
  • Letter of Recommendation from someone familiar with your academic and/or journalism work
  • Project Work samples of your best work - a 500 word essay written in third person as a news story (Typed, double spaced). Pick one topic:
    • Why should you be selected to take part in the 2012 NAJA Student Projects?
    • What do you think the trend towards convergence means for the future of indigenous journalism?

The deadline to submit your application package is March 9.
