Native Brief: WINDOW ROCK, ARIZONA - Navajo President Ben Shelly will speak at the National Navajo Code Talkers Day Commemoration Ceremony at the Navajo Veterans Park in Window Rock, Arizona tomorrow.

The 2011National Navajo Code Talkers Day will be held in collaboration with the president's declaration of Navajo Nation Code Talker Week, August 14-19, 2011.

In 1982, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed August 14th as National Navajo Code Talkers Day and to express appreciation to all American Indians who have served the United States in times of war.

During World War II, the Navajo code talkers - using their Native language - were instrumental in assisting the US military win the war due to the opponents' inability to break the language barrier.

President Shelly will present a memorial wreath and proclamation. He will then deliver the opening ceremony speech with the following guests of honor listed below.

    7:30 am     Reveille & Flag Raising

    9:00 am     Parade of Colors

    10:00 am     Commemoration Ceremony with opening remarks by Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly followed by guest speakers: Colonel Jay R. Vargas, (Ret.) Congressional Medal of Honor, Captain Lenny Lopez, and United States Marine Corps and Keith Little, USMC 4th Marine Division-WW II and president of the Navajo Code Talkers Association.
