WASHINGTON – Today, June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. The day was founded in 1995 by the National Association of People with AIDS to promote HIV testing.

National HIV Testing Day

Unfortunately, AIDS and HIV is a problem in Indian country. The following statistics provided by the Office of Minority Health about AIDS and HIVS bear this out:

  • American Indians/Alaska Natives have a 30 percent higher rate of AIDS and HIV infection as compared to the white population.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native men have a 50 percent higher AIDS rate as compared to white men.
  • In 2010, American Indian/Alaska Native women were three times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV infection, as compared to the White female population.

This is a good day for you to get involved! Take the Test, Take Control.
