Emergency Homeowners' Loan Program (EHLP)Deadline July 22

NATIVE BRIEF: WASHINGTON - American Indians in need of mortgage payment assistance in participating states must meet the July 22 deadline.

The mortgage payment assistance program is available through the Emergency Homeowners' Loan Program (EHLP) that is a new program from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The program provides mortgage payment assistance to eligible homeowners experiencing a drop in income of at least 15 percent, directly resulting from involuntary unemployment or underemployment due to the economy and/or a medical condition. The mortgage assistance covers past-due mortgage payments, as well as a portion of the homeowner's mortgage payment for up to 24 months (up to $50,000).

EHLP is offered in the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. EHLP is also offered in Puerto Rico.

The deadline for homeowners to submit a Pre-Applicant Screening Worksheet is July 22, 2011.

The EHLP program was created to provide emergency mortgage assistance to homeowners who are: temporarily and involuntary unemployed; underemployed due the economy; a medical condition and are at risk of foreclosure.

In order to qualify, the following requirements must be met:

  • Own fee simple title to the mortgaged property
  • Involuntary unemployment or underemployment due to the economy or medical condition
  • Current income at least 15% less than it was in 2009
  • At least 90 delinquent on your mortgage as of June 1, 2011
  • Have received written notice from mortgage lender indicating that you are delinquent on your mortgage payment (breach letter)
  • Mortgaged property must be principal residence
  • Everyone named on first lien must be a US Citizen, US non-citizen national or qualified alien
  • You are not currently in Bankruptcy
  • Have no more than two open liens on your home
  • Have no Federal tax lien
  • Not delinquent on any federal debt
  • History of good payment on mortgage prior to you reduction in income

EHLP is managed by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Housing Counseling and administered through NeighborWorks® America.
