MANISTEE, MICHIGAN - The State of Michigan declares the third Friday in September, "Michigan Indian Day."

This year to celebrate Michigan Indian Day, the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians is hosting an all-day training on American Indian cultural competency. The workshop is called, "Michigan Indian Day Ethnic and Culturally Competent Practice with American Indian People."

The workshop will be held at the Tribe's Little River Casino and Resort in Manistee, Michigan on Friday, September 23 from 8 am - 4 pm.

The presenters are:

  • LeAnne Silvey, PhD, LMSW, ACSW, Associate Professor, Human Development and Family Studies, and Acting Director, American Indian Studies at Michigan State University

  • Bill Memberto, MSW, Director Family Services Department, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians

  • Lois Beardslee, MA in Art History, Adjunct Instructor, Communications Division, Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse City, Michigan and author

The objectives for the workshop are: apply general knowledge, skills and values necessary for culturally competent service provisions and practice; identify how the history of American Indians has impact on current functioning; understand service barriers and experiences of families when cultural competence is not incorporated and describe how the use of evidence-based practice trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be used effectively with American Indian families.

This workshop is part of Michigan State University School of Social Work Continuing Education.
