Liberation Day: Remembering Wounded KneeMorning Prayer 2011

Native Brief: SAN FRANCISCO - Thirty nine years ago on February 27, 1973, the American Indian Movement with Oglala Lakota tribal members began a 71 day occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

To commemorate the occupation, AIM West will host its annual Liberation Day. A morning prayer will be held beginning at 10:00 am pst at Lands End in San Francisco. The ceremony will last until 1:00 pm pst.

Speakers will include Wounded Knee veterans: Lenny Foster, Navajo, who serves as the spiritual advisor to Leonard Peltier and traditional storyteller Jessie Riddle, Apache/Pit River Nation.

Other speakers include, Norman "Wounded Knee" DeOcampo, Miwok, from SSP&RIT - Sacred Sites Protection and Rights of Indigenous Tribes; Tony Gonzales, AIM West director; Corrina Gould, Chochenyo Ohlone, Sogorea Te Warriors and Laura Cedillo, Luta Candelaria.

Other presenters include poets, storytellers, musicians and dancers.
