LEWISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA - The Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee announces a candlelight vigil and rally on behalf of Leonard Peltier for Saturday and Sunday, August 6 and 7.

Leonard Peltier, the American Indian activist, who has been in federal prison for over 35 years has been in Administrative Detention - "the hole" - since June 27 for two minor infractions.

Peltier was placed in solitary confinement for allegedly "a woman in the UK mailed a Scottish bank note which was actually delivered to him by prison officials, and a light switch that had been tampered with by a cellmate some time ago," according to his attorney, Robert R. Bryan of San Francisco.

Peltier is serving a life sentence in the US Penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. He was convicted for the 1975 murders of two FBI agents on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He was convicted in 1977. Peltier is considered to be a political prisoner of war by many American Indians throughout the United States and others worldwide.

Organizers are requesting supporters interested in coming to the vigil to be at the prison at 7:00 pm. on August 6th for a candlelight vigil to protest the use of solitary confinement in the US, and in support of prisoners in solitary confinement at the federal penitentiary at Lewisburg - in support of Leonard Peltier, in particular.

Then come back and gather at 10:00 am on August 7th for a Free Peltier Rally. The rally is for Peltier's freedom from solitary confinement and from prison. The Committee is seeking clemency for Peltier.

Those coming are encouraged to bring posters and banners, drums, candles, water and food snacks.
