Landslide Elects James Billie Tribal Chair of Seminole Tribe

NATIVE BRIEF: HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA. - James Billie has been elected tribal chairman of Seminole Tribe of Florida. He won the election in a landslide, winning 58.4 percent, over current Chairman Mitchell Cypress, who has served for the past eight years.

Billie, 67, previously served as tribal chairman prior to Cypress’ two terms. During that tenure, Billie served 23 years as tribal chairman and began a high-stakes bingo operation in 1979. It was reportedly the first American Indian-owned bingo operations in the United States.

Gaming in the state of Florida is a $2 billion per year industry, according the Indian Gaming Industry Report. The Seminole Tribe of Florida owns the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida and six other casinos in Florida.

Worldwide, the Seminole Tribe of Florida owns the Hard Rock Café and Hotels.

Billie will be sworn in on June 6, 2011.
