Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Celebrates 75 Years of Recognition at the Annual Powwow

BARAGA, MICHIGAN - Before the powwow, laughter will be in order in Baraga, Michigan, tonight at 7 pm. "Laughter is Good Medicine" performed by Cree comedian Don Burnstick will be performed tonight "Celebrating 75 Years of Recognition" of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.

Don Burnstick, Cree from the Alexander First Nation, will perform as part of the weekend events. Burnstick is considered one of Canada's foremost comedians.

The celebration continues on Friday with the opening of the 33rd Keweenaw Bay Maawanji'iding (Powwow) at the Ojibwa Campgrounds.

The Grand Entry times for the three-day powwow are as follows: Friday at 7 pm; Saturday at noon and 7 pm; and Sunday at noon.

On Saturday, there will be a fry bread contest, youth 2-step championship, midnight 2-step championship and a drum challenge.

Camping is free with powwow admission.
