ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA Jim Thorpe is thought of by some as the greatest athlete to ever live. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Jim Thorpe's Olympic achievements.
15 Powwows this Weekend
Jim Thorpe was a combination of Potawatomi and Sac & Fox. In 1912, Thorpe set records, won gold medals and made history as the one of the world's greatest athletes of the 20th Century. He continued his athletic talents in baseball, basketball and football.
Organizers of the 2nd Annual Rocky Mount Jim Thorpe Powwow will honor Thorpe's memory with a reading of a proclamation honoring the great athlete at 5 pm today at in Sunset Park in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
Grand entry will kick off up under the oaks in Sunset Park at 6 pm.
Over 100 American Indian dancers in regalia, singers, drummers, artists, and crafts persons will participate in the powwow. Over $10,000 will be offered in dance and drum prizes. At least five drums are expected.
The public will be able to purchase some of the finest American Indian art and crafts, including: turquoise jewelry, moccasins, beadwork, rugs, books, paintings and dreamcatchers to name a few. Buffalo stew, fried bread, Indian corn soup and buffalo burgers are just a few of the American Indian food items that will be on sale at the event.
Admission to the powwow is as follows: 13 and up; $8; 3-12; $6.The Rocky Mount Food Bank will benefit from the Jim Thorpe Powwow.
