Interior Secretary Salazar Announces Renaming of Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark

NATIVE BRIEF: WASHINGTON - US Department of Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced last Thursday the renaming of Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark in Lovell, Wyoming, which was designated in 1970. The new name is Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark.

Also, the site now includes almost 4,000 additional acres of significant and intact American Indian sacred areas.

The expanded 4,080 acres, high in the Bighorn Mountains, includes the summit of Medicine Mountain, the Bighorn Medicine Wheel, an adjoining ridge, and other adjacent lands which constitute traditional spiritual and ceremonial grounds.

Medicine Mountain is still used today by several tribes for ceremonial purposes.
