WASHINGTON With the federal government shutdown underway, the Indian Health Service released the following statement this morning to the Native News Network:
Indian Health Service Statement on Federal Government Shutdown
"IHS would continue to provide direct clinical health care services as well as referrals for contracted services that cannot be provided through IHS clinics.
Approximately 94 percent of IHS staff will remain on duty to continue services to preserve the safety of human life.
Tribes and Urban Indian health programs are encouraged to continue to operate services with available resources. IHS would not perform national policy development and issuance, oversight, and other functions, except those necessary to meet the immediate needs of the patients, medical staff, and medical facilities."
Please call your Indian Health Service facility with questions you may have regarding the shutdown.
