US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs

WASHINGTON – The US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is having an oversight hearing on advancing the relationship between the United States and Native American Tribes through self governance and self determination.

A big part of relationships between the US Government and Native American Tribes is self determination. Tribal self determination has to do with how tribes in the United States govern themselves, It is meant to change a lot of the policies that the United States government put on Native American tribes like the reservation system. It allows the tribes to enact many of their own laws that are different from the United States and even establish their own schools and universities.

Native American self determination is one of the more important issues that tribes face when it comes to dealing with the US government. Some parts of it such as cultural renewal and reservation development are always at the forefront, self determination has a large scope and touches every Native American in the United States today.

Self determination and self governance of tribes has been brought up by the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs before. That is not to say that they are recycles old issues. This shows how big of an importance continuing to advance the relationship between the United States Government and Native American Tribes.
