BETHESDA, MARYLAND - Whether you work in a tribal office, on a tribal construction site, or as a waitress at your tribal casino, how you work can affect your health.

An analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, N-HANES, found that employment status can affect physical activity levels.

Within fulltime employed adults, those with active jobs such as construction workers, waiters and waitresses, had more activity than those with sedentary jobs, such as secretaries and administrators.

The study used accelerometers to measure intensity of all body movements, not just steps.

Regardless of employment status, researchers suggest people exercise, to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Tips When You Work in an Office

  • Use the stairway, instead of elevator
  • Get up from your desk, if possible, and move around at least once per hour
  • Health experts encourage you to stand up during telephone calls.
  • Take walks during breaks and lunch hours
  • Park your car at farthest point possible in parking lot
  • Stay hydrated - water helps your body with physical and mental functions, such as detoxification and digestion
  • Make you have the right chair that allows you to have good posture
  • Eat healthy

The study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, was supported by the National Institutes of Health.
