CyberMonday, shopping onlineProtect Yourself

Native Brief: BOSTON - Today is CyberMonday, where people will do their holiday shopping online. This year online shopping is expected to rise 16.8 percent to $46.7 billion, compared to 2010's $39.9 billion.

Just over half of all shopping will take while employees are working. So, if you are at work at a tribal office or elsewhere, be sure you are use precaution so that your organization's computer or your personal information is not at risk.

This year may be riskier because of the down economy. More people are in need so cyber criminals have been busy working on ways to steal identities through the Internet. Additionally, some companies have allowed their security software to lapse as a way to increase their bottom line profits.

Law enforcement in Boston has issued some guidelines to ensure your online shopping is safer.

Please use these general guidelines to educate yourself and others about basic security:

  • Log on directly to official websites for businesses identified in email campaigns, rather than clicking on links.
  • Update anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
  • Shop on websites with Secure Socket Layer security.
  • Don't buy anything with a debit card.
  • Never give out your Social Security number.
  • Use strong passwords, which contain at least five letters and one number.
