PINE RIDGE, SOUTH DAKOTA – The 20th anniversary of the establishment of the SuAnn Big Crow Boys & Girls Club in Pine Ridge coincides with the first such Club in Indian Country.

Boys & Girls Clubs20 Years in Indian Country

Today, some 200 Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Indian Country serve almost 100,000 American Indian and Alaska Native youth in 24 states. The programs offered by the Boys & Girls Clubs are designed to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce violence, such as gang-related violence and bullying.

Ernie Stevens, chairman of the National Indian Gaming Association, will be a guest speaker at the anniversary celebration at the SuAnn Big Crow Boys & Girls Club in Pine Ridge on Saturday.

The SuAnne Big Crow Boys & Girls Club is a 30,000 square foot, $6 million community based facility that includes the largest nearby library on the reservation (Rapids City, South Dakota – two hours away) plus a state of the art tech center connecting 500 Native American youth and their families to life beyond the reservation, essential for ensuring a sustainable community, while preserving tribal cultures.

This Boys & Girls Club was named for SuAnn Big Crow, who as a youth on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, envisioned a safe place where youth could gather to teach them the merits of living healthy lives, free of alcohol and drugs. She died tragically in an automobile accident in 1992. Her family, friends and community members worked hard to establish the Club in her memory.
