Chickahominy Indian Tribe Holds Fall Festival

PROVIDENCE FORDE, VIRGINIA– This weekend the Chickahominy Tribe is holding their 61st annual powwow in Providence Forde, Virginia. There will be your typical dancing and drums as well as arts and crafts as well as many other activities.

14 Powwows this Weekend

The Chickahominy Tribe were an Algonquian tribe that lived around the first permanent English settlement in American in Jamestown, VA. Much of the success of Jamestown can be attributed to the Chickahominy. They helped the English greatly during their first few winters by trading them food. They also taught them how to grow and preserve crops. If it were not for the Chickahominy and their hospitality the colony in Jamestown may have failed.

Over the course of the next two hundred years the Chickahominy were forced to move on many occasions due to continued expansion of English settlements in the area. Today the Chickahominy tribe has about 840 people who live in a 5 mile radius of each other in the Chickahominy Ridge. There are several hundred more around the United States.

The Chickahominy hold a great importance to how this country has been shaped today. Their tribe is rich in history and their powwow has been around for over 60 years. If you are in the Virginia area this weekend check out the Chickahominy powwow.
