Powwow Calendar

SAINT MARIES, IDAHO – The Cherokees of Idaho will be holding their first annual intertribal powwow this weekend. The Cherokees came to Idaho in 1836 before the Trail of Tears to look for a better life and did not want to be forced to move somewhere they did not choose. Most of the tribe can trace their blood back to the eastern band of Cherokees. The Principle Chief has stated that he feels that people of mixed blood should have the chance to enroll with the tribe so they can have a place to call home as well.

The Cherokees of Idaho have been looking to teach more about their history as they learn more about it themselves. Aside from the powwow they are planning to do many plays in the future including one about the Trail of Tears.

The Cherokees of Idaho First Annual Powwow starts on Friday June 1st and goes until Sunday June 3rd. There will be craft, dance and long bow demos, as well as storytelling and drums.
