GRAND RAPIDS - Today is a special day for the Native News Network. It marks our first year anniversary since we began publishing last February 15, 2011.
Beginning with a very small readership circle of less than ten, our circle has grown substantially during the last year. We hear from people from throughout Indian Country and from around the world, who have been receptive to our American Indian news website.
During the past year, we have forged many alliances with tribes, governmental agencies and organizations to receive news releases in order to have a good pulse on what is happening by and for Native people.
The Native News Network strives to serve Indian Country well with accurate and timely news coverage of things that are important and relevant to Native people.
On that premise, many times there is a balancing act to ensure proper information is communicated from the federal government, tribes, organizations and individuals. We are independently owned, therefore are a free press within Indian Country.
While American Indians and Alaska Natives face serious challenges in contemporary times, there are many success stories, which we try to highlight.
Some stories are not particularly easy to cover, such as violence against Native women or the high rate of suicide among our youth. However, these stories must be told. We know the national media covers these types of stories in a very cursory fashion - if at all.
The Native News Network appreciates your continued readership and loves it when you share our stories to your family, friends and associates.
As we continue to grow, we want you to feel a part of our growth. Therefore, your comments and emails are important to us.
Chi Megwetch (Thank you very much) for your continued readership!
