Larissa FastHorse - Lakota
LOS ANGELES - Native Voices at the Autry is showcasing a reading from their First Look Series: Plays in Progress entitled "Hunka" tomorrow. For years, Native Voices have supported and instructed Native American playwrights, directors, and actors with various workshops and public presentations.
"Hunka" is a play written by Larissa FastHorse, Lakota, and directed by Laurie Woolery. The play is about a family dealing with a teen pregnancy and exploring the options of adoption, redemption, and responsibility. The play offers gritty realities mixed with humorous adjustments that will leave the audience with much to think about.
Larissa FastHorse is an award-winning playwright and has been awarded with the 2010 National Endowment for the Arts Distinguished New Play Development Grant. Her plays have been commissioned for various theaters including Cornerstone Theatre, Cherokee Historical Association Mountainside Theatre, and Kennedy Center Theatre for Young Audiences. Her productions include "Average Family and Teaching Disco Square Dancing to Our Elders: A Class Presentation."
By encouraging audience feedback and development for the playwright, Native Voices will be immediately hosting a Q&A following the reading with Larissa FastHorse, Laurie Woolery, and actors Susan Wilder, Maxton Scott, Mohawk, and Elizabeth Frances, Cherokee.
Admission is free.
