SAN FRANCISCO Northern California Cherokee/Choctaw singer, songwriter and visual artist Brianna Lea Pruett has just signed her first recording contract with Canyon Records.
Her CD is entitled, "Gypsy Bells," will be released on October 1.
She has also collaborated with Canyon Records to produce a full length record (33 rpm) on 180 gram vinyl, with six songs on each side.
“This is my first vinyl and Canyon Records first vinyl in 30 years",”
“The vinyl market has been steadily increasing over the past six years, especially among young people,”
Brianna Lea Pruett is a multi"instrumentalist who plays guitar, piano, bass, drums and is now learning banjo. She also plays the cedar bird-whistle flute. She has been performing since she was 15 years old, on all types of stages, from art galleries to the Roxie in Los Angeles.
“On this last tour, I performed in the room where Nat King Cole got his start,”
Ms. Pruett booked her own tour to Australia in January 2013.
"I worked really hard. I performed in Canberra, Sydney, and Alice Springs. I was also on several radio shows where they said my music reminded them of a combination of Gillian Welsh and Kimya Dawson",
she said. While in Australia she met one of the most well known indigenous country singers, Warren Williams.
"He had recently recorded a CD where he combined the tribal languages of his mother and father. He went from covering only English language songs to performing and recording in his native languages. I have also written songs in Tsalagi (Cherokee) and I plan to integrate that material into my next CD. Signing with Canyon Records helped me understand that I don't have to separate my Cherokee language from songs in English",
When she returned from Australia, she booked another tour for herself that took her from Northern California through the Southwest.
"I played the South by Southwest Festival in Austin. I then performed in Georgia and Florida and then into North Carolina. I especially enjoyed audiences in Raleigh-Durham. In New York City I played several clubs including the Red Hook. I was really exhausted when I returned",
Bullet magazine recently called one of the singles from her new CD , "No Diamond Ring" "breathtaking folk". She has received excellent reviews of "Gypsy Bells" from several different sources. After listening to some of the tracks on the CD, and hearing her singing and playing live, Brianna Lea Pruett is most definitely an extremely talented American Indian musical talent.
Fans can pre-order vinyl now via her Kickstarter Campaign at Gypsy-Bells-On-Vinyl or visit her on Facebook. "Gypsy Bells" release date is October 1.
