AIM West Conference Kicks Off Today

SAN FRANCISCO - The American Indian Movement West conference kicks off today at Baha'i Center located at 170 Valencia Street, between 14th and Market with a press conference at 10:00 am pst.

Among the speakers at press conference: Clyde Bellecourt, national American Indian Movement co-founder and leader; Chief Terrance Nelson, Roseau Reserve in Manitoba; Morning Star Gali; Jean Whitehorse; and Tom Poor Bear, Vice President of the Oglala Lakota Nation. Also representatives attending from the All African People's Revolutionary Party, Sal Condor of the bay area FMLN (El Salvador) and more. The press conference will be moderated by William "Jimbo" Simmons.

Issues

The following issues of vital concern to Indigenous peoples will be discussed during the conference:

  • Protection of sacred sites
  • Clemency for Leonard Peltier
  • Keystone XL pipeline
  • Announcement for "A Walk for Human Rights to White House"
  • Support of Occupation Wall Street
  • Global movements - Honor the Treaties
  • Environmental Issues
  • US Department of Justice report on increase of hate crimes
  • Implementation of United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • Continuing struggle for the right to Self-Determination.

The American Indian Movement conference opening session begins immediately after the press conference, which will include solidarity speakers, films, and invited guests and delegates with expertise in topics to be discussed in the course of the workshops and panel discussions.

Monday's Schedule

  • 9:00 am - Open to Registration
  • 10:00 am - Press Conference
  • 10:45 am - Open with a prayer/sage/song and drumming. Welcome and introduction. Special invited guest speakers to include AIM leadership of the Grand Governing Council
  • 12 Noon to 1:00 pm - Lunch (provided for conference delegates). A screening of "Ishi: A Story of Dignity, Hope and Courage." A one hundred year celebration to his life when Ishi, a Yahi Indian, arrived out of the foothills of Northern California into the town of Oroville in August 1911
  • 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm - Chapter and community reports
