9 Weekend POWWOWs
BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA - In 1992 a group of San Francisco Bay Area American Indians convinced the Berkeley, California City Council to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day. Additionally, the group has held a powwow every year to celebrate Indigenous People's Day.
Late last month, the Berkeley City Council declared a proclamation that reads in part:
WHEREAS, the Indigenous Peoples Day Pow Wow and Indian Market has brought greater understanding to the people of Berkeley regarding Native cultures and the enormous contributions they have made, and continue to make, to world culture.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Berkeley that it hereby proclaims Saturday, October 8, 2011 as Indigenous Peoples Day in the City of Berkeley; officially sponsors Indigenous Peoples Day; offers gratitude to Native People on behalf of the people of Berkeley, in recognition of your care for this land, and in honor of your culture and philosophy, which are needed now more than ever if the planet is to survive; and urges all Berkeleyans to attend the Berkeley Indigenous Peoples Day Pow Wow and Indian Market, on Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 10 am to 6 pm in Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park.In addition to the powwow, the city will have an Indian Market to help celebrate American Indian art and culture.
