The Longest Walk 3 - Reversing Diabetes was the brainchild of Dennis Banks, co-founder of the American Indian Movement. Three years ago, he was diagnosed with the disease and has controlled it with diet and exercise.
He decided to take the message of the deadly disease to American Indian reservations and communities across America.
The Longest Walk 3 - Reversing Diabetes had a northern route and southern route. The northern route began on February 14, 2011 in Portland, Oregon and the southern route began in San Diego, California on the same date.
This picture was taken from the steps of the US Treasury Building as the Longest Walk was on the sidewalk along 15th Street making its way to the White House, located at 1600 Pennsylvania. It features Dennis Banks. Ojibwe, and Harry "Goodwolf" Kindness, Oneida leading the walk. The photo features American Indians from California, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Utah and Nevada. Also, there is a gentleman in the photograph from Japan.
Within five minutes, the Long Walkers held a water ceremony in front of the White House.
